Inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases, rheuma-orthopaedics

Rheumatology

At Tays, we study and treat inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases, such as inflammation of joints (arthritis), systemic connective tissues diseases and vasculitis, as well as symptoms and functional disorders they have caused. We are responsible for diagnosing inflammatory rheumatoid diseases, beginning sufficient medical treatment at an early stage, treatment of the active stage and surgeries for rheumatic diseases.

At Tays, rheumatic diseases are treated at the Central Hospital as well as Sastamala and Valkeakoski Hospitals. Treatment of paediatric arthritis in schildren under 16 years is allocated to the Paediatric Outpatient Clinic of Tays Central Hospital.

Rheumatic diseases treated at Tays include, for example:

  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • ankylosing spondylitis
  • arthropathic psoriasis
  • inflammation of joints, also related to inflammatory bowel diseases
  • refractory gout
  • connective tissue diseases
  • vasculitis.

In addition, we perform artificial joint surgeries and soft tissue balancing surgeries, as well as fusion and cleaning surgeries.

Tests and treatment at Tays

In the early stage of the disease, the treatment focuses on diagnosing the inflammatory rheumatic diseases as well as beginning sufficient medication at a sufficiently early stage.

In addition to a thorough clinical examination, we use problem-based targeted laboratory and imaging studies for diagnosis. The patient receives inter-professional guidance on the primary disease, medical treatments, nutrition and exercise. Need for advanced medical treatments and surgeries is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The majority of patients are treated at Tays at the outpatient clinic. Intravenous biological drugs are also administered in the day unit of the Rheumatology Centre. In the ward, we treat febrile arthritis patients and other patients with severe illnesses whose disease is in an active stage or whose mobility or functional capacity is threatened. Rheumatic surgeries are performed at Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement.

Through all stages of the disease, we have at our disposal the special services of a rheumatologist and rheumatic orthopaedist as well as a rheumatology nurse, a rheumatology rehabilitation counsellor, a social worker, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a foot therapist.

We collaborate closely with basic health care in long-term treatment and observation.
