Contagious diseases

Infectious diseases

At Tays, we study and treat patients who have a difficult bacterial, virus or fungal disease that requires special expertise or who are particularly vulnerable to infections due to immunodeficiencies. We are also responsible for the prevention and monitoring of treatment-related infections in the Pirkanmaa area.

Experts of infectious diseases work in Tays Infectious Diseases Unit. Patients are treated in different wards at Tays and the infection ward B0 in Hatanpää Hospital. Diseases that we treat include the following, for example:

  • Sepsis
  • Endocarditis (infection of the heart valves and chambers)
  • Bone or soft tissue infection
  • Foreign object infection
  • Pneumonia
  • Immunodeficiency
  • HIV
  • Tuberculosis
  • Tropical disease or some other traveller's infection
  • Post-operative infection

Tests and treatment at Tays

The majority of patients with an infection require emergency and ward treatment. In severe cases, intensive care may also be needed.

Infection patients are usually treated with different kinds of microbial drugs. Patients with immunodeficiency may also receive immunoglobulin replacement therapy. In addition, laboratory tests and different imaging studies are needed.

Special expertise at Tays

We monitor and prevent treatment-related infections and investigate and prevent epidemics in the whole Pirkanmaa region. We counsel and train other health care actors in these matters. The treatment of HIV patients and patients with primary immunodeficiencies is allocated to Tays.

We have moved into new facilities

The new E building in the area of Tays Central Hospital is in operation. The Infectious Diseases Outpatient Clinic and Infectious Diseases Ward B0 from Hatanpää have moved there.
